How to Play

What type of game is it?

Spanish Over Coffee is a fun card game that can played at the kitchen table, in a coffee shop, or wherever else you can round up some folks who want to speak Spanish.

How many people are needed to play the game?

To play Spanish Over Coffee, you will need one NATIVE SPANISH SPEAKER who is bilingual and 2-4 INTERMEDIATE SPANISH SPEAKERS with at least two years of college-level Spanish.

What’s included in the box?

  • ICEBREAKER and TOPIC cards
these cards contain open-ended questions that encourage conversation
  • VERB cards
these cards push intermediate level speakers to try out new vocabulary and ask creative follow-up questions
  • PLAYER TOOL cards
these cards help you when you’re stuck and have no idea how to say something in Spanish–USE THEM!
  • NATIVE SPEAKER TOOL cards
these cards give native speakers a way to hold speakers accountable for using the language correctly

How does the game work?

For each round of conversation, one person is designated the CARD KING. This person shares an answer in Spanish to one of the questions posed on the yellow TOPIC CARDS. Then each player uses one of their Spanish VERB cards to ask a follow-up question to the CARD KING,
who must answer them all in Spanish!

There is no “down” time in this game. Although the CARD KING is the one officially in the hot seat, every player must be fully engaged in every round.

When a player gets stuck and can’t figure out how to say something in Spanish or doesn’t understand what another player is saying, they immediately use a PLAYER TOOL CARD to get clarification from the NATIVE SPANISH SPEAKER.

Whenever the NATIVE SPANISH SPEAKER hears a mistake or notices that a player is struggling, they use a NATIVE SPEAKER TOOL CARD to assist.

What are the rules?
